Beginner’s Tips for Buying Cigars

With every hobby or every interest, everyone has to start somewhere.

Buying your first cigar can be intimidating. There are so many different brands, blends, types, and sizes to choose from. The novice cigar smoker can get overwhelmed trying to find the right smoke for them.

We wanted to provide a good starting point for the new smokers, so we have compiled a list of helpful tips to help get you started.

1. Go to a tobacco/cigar retailer

Going in to a retailer has many advantages.

Most cigar retailers have a great variety to choose from. You will be able to look at all of the different cigars, inspect them, and know that they have been properly cared for prior to your purchase. Also, you can ask your tobacconist for advice, recommendations, and tips.

Going to a retailer presents you with the opportunity to get advice from people who know tobacco, and who smoke on a regular basis. These people have a great deal of knowledge you can absorb. Gaining knowledge from tobacco experts will help you in all stages of your hobby.

2. The more expensive doesn’t always mean better

You cannot judge a cigar by its price. There are plenty of great smokes under $10, and as a newbie you should take advantage of them. Explore your palate without breaking the bank, and try a wide variety of cigars.

3. Explore your mild side

Heavy and full-bodied smokes can often be a turn-off to the novice smoker. Start out with the mild cigars, and ease your way into the heavier stuff later on.

4. Buy a few at a time

Try a variety to develop your taste and explore your palate. Buy a few at a time, smoke the different cigars, and see which ones you really like.

5. Keep a note of your favorites

After smoking a cigar, make a note of your favorites. This can help you come up with which cigars you really like, your taste preferences, and which cigars to buy in the future.

We hope these tips help you have a great newbie experience. If anyone has anymore tips, feel free to comment.

  1. My father’s birthday is coming up, and I would like to get him some premium cigars for a present. But I haven’t bought some before, and I would like some advice on how to choose the right ones for him. It’s good to know that the more expensive doesn’t mean it’s a better. It’s nice to know that I don’t have to break the bank to get him so great cigars, and that I can get him a wide variety.
