Interview With Jason Nelson – Dictador Rum and Cigars

Dictador

Dictador creates some of the best spirits in the world, and they have recently expanded the brand into the cigar market. We had the pleasure to sit down with Jason Nelson, the Director of Sales with Dictador, to discuss Dictador’s new cigar line.

Thick Ash:

Thank you for taking your time to join us today. Dictador is very well-known around the world for making some of the best spirits and drinks available. How did you decide to expand the Dictador brand into the cigar industry?

J. Nelson:

“I was actually living in Asia for a couple of years. We ended up taking on the distribution for the Dictador Rum for the Asian market. They had a single Columbian cigar, and they thought it was very good and asked me to try it. At this point, I had been in the cigar industry for about 15 or 16 years. I was very honest with them, and I told them the cigar was not very good. They asked for my help to blend some new cigars. So, we spoke to a few manufacturers out of Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic. They really wanted a cigar that would pair nicely with their spirits, so they did not want to go down the track of infusion or flavored cigars. They wanted to keep the blend original, but they also wanted something that would match nicely with their spirits.”

Thick Ash:

Can you tell us a little bit about your blends?

J. Nelson:

“We spent some time blending, and we basically matched 3 different blends.

We have the Pavo Real which pairs nicely with the Columbian coffee, which we manufacture, and also the Columbian gins.

We have XO 1913 which is a Dominican puro with a Dominican Habano wrapper and that pairs very nicely with our XO rums. It also pairs nicely with Cognac and single malt whisky.

We have the J. Nelson 1974 which is our Mexican San Andreas Maduro and that pairs perfectly with our 12 and 20-year-old dark rums.”

Thick Ash:

How long has the cigar line been available in the U.S?

J. Nelson:

“We launched our products in the U.S at IPCPR 2015. We launched in the European market about 12 months ago. The European market has been very good. So, we are kind of opposite. Most of the cigar lines launch in the U.S then take on the rest of the global market, but we started off in the worldwide market. We already have distribution in Europe, Asia, and Australia. IPCPR 2015 was the big launch for the U.S market.”

Thick Ash:

You launched the cigar line only a short time ago, and you launched in the U.S market very recently. The market has been very good thus far. Where do you see Dictador in the next 5 years?

J. Nelson:

“Obviously we want to see it grow big. I have some great relationships with some of the other cigar manufactures and seen them start at IPCPR with 2 or 3 booths, and then I have watched them grow to 16 and 20 booths. We would like to see it grow, and we are trying to develop that Dictador experience. Obviously we have a different approach than most. We are completely vertical in the aspects of our own cigars, our own rum, our own gin, and our own coffee. We can create that full experience. When we go out and do events, we aren’t just going out with a cigar. We are doing a full pairing experience as well. We want to be well know for our cigars, and the experience we offer.”

Thick Ash:

Is there anything new that you are working on that you can share with us today?

J. Nelson:

“We started with the 3 blends. They have been received very well in the market. We are working on a couple of new blends. Those will probably be coming out of Nicaragua. I love the volcanic soil from Nicaragua, and I love the tobacco coming out of there. So, we are looking at a couple of new blends that we are hoping to release in the next 12 months.”

Thick Ash:

It has been our pleasure, and we thank you again for you time. Is there anything else that you would like to share with us before we wrap up this interview?

J. Nelson:

It is a brand new experience, and it is something we have really focused on. A lot of cigar companies are making craft beer series cigars, or they are making a pairing series cigar. We are different because we are working with our own products. It is not like we are working with another manufacture to create a pairing cigar. We have focused on what is going to pair well with what we have been doing for a long time. We started in the rum business, and now we have perfected that experience with a cigar line that goes very well with our products. It is a new experience and a nice experience to sit down and enjoy a rum or a gin or a coffee and have a cigar that is really going to pair very nicely.

Thick Ash would like to send a huge thank you to Jason Nelson and Dictador for the information and the hospitality. Grab a Dictador cigar, a Dictador drink, and enjoy the Dictador experience. It is an experience like no other.
