Interview with Santa Claus – A Thick Ash Exclusive

The Holiday season bestows a busy workload on our friends at the North Pole. There are over 7 billion people in the world, and Santa Claus and his crew are busy preparing to stock them with gifts to open on Christmas morning. Thick Ash Magazine was able to sit down with the busy big guy this year, and we were able to get some inside information about the cigar lifestyle at the North Pole.

Thick Ash:

First, I want to thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to see us. We know you are really busy this time of year. We have been wanting to know, as I am sure everyone else has, what is your ‘go-to’ cigar?

Santa:

“It is great to be here, and I always enjoy talking to you guys. I do not have a particular everyday cigar or ‘go-to’ cigar. I like to smoke different cigars all of the time, and I try to experience a wide variety of flavor profiles. Now, I do have my favorite brands that I know make an excellent cigar; Davidoff, CLE, Crowned Heads, Illusione, and the occasional Arturo Fuente. So, when in doubt I will pick up something I know will be a top-notch smoke. There are so many different cigars, blends, and companies out there. I like to give each company a chance and see which lines I enjoy. Sometimes, I just prefer to keep my palate guessing. I look for a new cigar experience every time I light one up.”

Thick Ash:

This time of year (Winter) averages −40° F at the North Pole. With temperatures that extreme, where do you smoke? Are you an outdoor smoker, or do you have an indoor lounge?

Santa:

“Well, during the Summer it is not too bad back home. The temperatures normally stay in the mid 30° range, so I really enjoy sitting on the back patio or on the front porch during that time. It is a nice experience to smoke outdoors, and I think I prefer that. During the Winter, it is a little bit more difficult. It is difficult to enjoy a cigar when all you can think about is freezing to death. So, when I started smoking, many many years ago, I built a man-cave or cigar room, as one might call it, with a walk-in humidor and a lounge where I can enjoy an occasional smoke. It is comfortable in there, I can entertain guests, and I have a place to keep a stockpile of cigars.”

Thick Ash:

Many of our readers have speculated that the elves and reindeer will smoke an occasional cigar to stay warm. Do the elves and reindeer enjoy smoking cigars?

Santa:

“That is true on some regards. Some of my best smoking buddies are elves and reindeer, and we usually smoke more than an occasional cigar together; more than one a day. We enjoy the cigar lifestyle, and yes the occasional cigar will help with warmth. The cigar lifestyle brings us closer together and creates an extremely social environment. It helps us work better together, it relieves the stress and tension, and a little smoke and fire never hurts when you are at the North Pole.”

Thick Ash:

Delivery night has to be one of the most stressful nights of the year. Do you smoke on the sleigh, and how many cigars to you smoke on delivery night?

Santa:

“I do not normally light up in the sleigh on Christmas Eve, because I hate being rushed when I am smoking. Between the time schedule of making the deliveries, the speed of travel, and the number of stops we make; it is very hard to concentrate on the flavor profile of the cigar. I normally have a coffee and a cigar before everything is loaded onto the sleigh, and I wait until the work night is over to enjoy a smoke when I get back home. So, I would say at least two if you count the morning I get home from delivering.”

Thick Ash:

Parking the sleigh Christmas morning after delivering all of those gifts must be satisfying. Your ending the work year, and you are able to relax for a little bit. What is your favorite drink to pair with a cigar after that long work night?

Santa:

“Yes. After a long night like that, I just want to relax and rejuvenate. I would have to say my favorite drink is a hot chocolate with Irish cream. It pairs really well with most cigars, it warms me up, and it provides that extra shot of relaxation. I really look forward to that moment when I am able to sit down with a drink, light my cigar, and sit in my recliner next to the fireplace. That moment is one of the best feelings I have all year. It signals the end of a long work year, it signals that all of the children on our list will receive their gifts, and it signals a much needed break before we start the work year all over again.”

Thick Ash:

You have been traveling for a long time. You travel all over the world, and I am sure you are able to smoke cigars from many of these places. What is your favorite country of origin for cigars?

Santa:

“I enjoy traveling, and seeing all parts of the world. It is especially enjoyable to travel to some of these cigar countries where the weather is tropical, and I can enjoy that weather while I am there. I enjoy cigars from all over the world, and I have learned to respect a cigar for what it is. I typically lean towards a full-bodied cigar with a great flavor profile, and I am very fond of Nicaraguan tobacco. So, if I absolutely had to choose my favorite country of origin I would choose Nicaragua.”

Thick Ash:

Is there anything you would like to add before we go?

Santa:

“Thank you for having me. It was great being here, and I look forward to talking to you guys again. I am preparing for a large holiday season, so it is nice to get my mind away from that while I have the opportunity. I would like everyone to know that milk and cookies pair well with a great cigar, so don’t forget to leave me one next to the milk and cookies. I would also like to wish everyone and their families a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.”
