Pairing Cigars and Beer

Cigar smoking is a unique and enjoyable lifestyle. The great thing about it is there are many things that enhance the smoking experience. One thing I love to do is pair my love of cigars with my love for beer.

With so many craft breweries brewing up different types of beer every day and with the abundance of cigars on the shelves to choose from; there is a growing interest with pairing the two together.

Creating the perfect cigar and beer pairing is extremely subjective. I might love different cigars and different beer than you. I might love one pairing, and I might despise another. It is all about trial and error, and it is all about finding the pairing that suits you. The experimentation of finding the right pairing for you is all part of the fun, and it enhances both lifestyles.

When it comes to beer and cigar pairings, I was always told over and over again always try to match the beer to the cigar. Mild cigars tend to pair better with lighter beers and full-bodied smokes with heavier beers. This helps the flavors pair better, and it keeps the pairings from over powering each other.

Here are a few of my favorites for you to try out:

Cigar:  La Flor Dominicana La Nox    Beer:  Crooked Letter Brewing Company – Mystery Romp

Mystery Romp by Crooked Letter Brewing Company has a strong coffee like profile. A beer with a heavy profile, such as this one, is paired well with a full-bodied cigar. The La Nox provides the strong profile to enhance the flavor of this delicious brew.

Cigar:  Perdomo La Tradicion Reserve Cameroon   Beer:  Samuel Adams – Cherry Wheat

The Perdomo La Tradicion Reserve Cameroon provides smooth, mild, and sweet undertones to pair well with Samuel Adam’s Cherry Wheat. The sweetness of the Cameroon compliments the mild carbonation and hint of cherry from Samuel Adam’s Cherry Wheat. The two balance each other out perfectly, and they create a wonderful smoking experience.

Cigar:  Oliva Serie G Maduro   Beer:  Dog Fish Head – 90 Minute IPA

Imperial pale ales are generally thought of as ‘palate killers’ because of their bitterness. A strong cigar is recommended when choosing this type of beer to pair. The flavor profile of the Oliva Serie G Maduro balances out the bitterness of the Dog Fish Head 90 Minute IPA, and both pair very well with each other.

Cigar:  Drew Estate’s Undercrown Shade   Beer:  New Belgium Brewing Company – Spring Blonde

The Undercrown Shade is one of my favorite Connecticut shade cigars. This smoke is flavorful, balanced, and silky smooth. New Belgium’s Spring Blonde has a light, crisp, and refreshing flavor profile that blends perfectly with this smoke.

Cigar:  Camacho Triple Maduro   Beer:  Southern Tier Brewing Company – Warlock

Southern Tier Brewing Company’s Warlock is an imperial stout brewed with pumpkins. The light carbonation, the hint of roasted pumpkin, and the bitterness of this brew pairs perfectly with the spices presented by Camacho’s Triple Maduro.
